Mount Sion

Mount Sion, in Irish Cnoc Sion, is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Waterford City. It was founded by teachers at the school of the same name and, while it is a separate organisation, the club has kept a close relationship with the school and shares its sports facilities in the city.

It is the most successful hurling club in Waterford by a considerable distance, with 35 county senior titles to its name, and it added five county senior football titles in the 1950s. Beyond the county it has twice been Munster senior club champions, beating South Liberties of Limerick in 1981 and Sixmilebridge of Clare in 2002. A run of county titles between 1994 and 2006 brought seven more championships to the club.

Few clubs in the country have supplied as many notable players. John Keane, named on the hurling team of the millennium, Philly Grimes, Frankie Walsh, who was the last Waterford man to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup in 1959, Tony Browne and Ken McGrath all came through here, as did Austin Gleeson. Browne and Gleeson were each named hurler of the year, in 1998 and 2016 respectively.
